About UsDeafBlind Young Adults in Action (DBYAA) was originally a participatory action research class in which a group of deafblind young adults came together to learn leadership and advocacy skills in the national capital led to something bigger. It's the founding of a tax-exempt national organization, adopting a vision of a better world and core values to guide its mission. While the purpose of the class was to promote the civic engagement of participants and their professional development, the young adults saw an important opportunity to advance their community in particular and people with disabilities in general through their collective experience with the leadership development class, as well as their individual accomplishments and talents. Which led to DeafBlind Citizens in Action (DBCA). All members of DBCA participated in the leadership class, ensuring they have the experience to help the organization fulfill its mission.
While we strive to educate members of the community about their civil rights and promote the full integration of the community into broader society, we also seek to increase the general public's awareness of individuals who are deafblind so that it benefits society as a whole. People who are deafblind are among the lowest incidence and undeserved disability group; that's why we are striving to bring change to the community and in the process have a positive impact on society. Including all citizens in all facets of life is one of our cherished values as a nation long celebrated as the beacon of opportunity, and is why politicians of all parties overwhelmingly supported disability rights. But there's far more work to be done to eliminate barriers to equality. |
